Wishlist Wednesday

Wishlist Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted at Pen to Paper, where I will share one book that has been on my wishlist for a while.

Saltwater Vampires by Kirsty Eagar

He looked to the sky, praying for rain, a downpour, some sign from the heavens that he should refuse the abomination contained in that flask. But all he saw was the bloated white face of the moon smiling down on him …

And the sky around it was cold and clear and black …

They made their circle of blood. And only the moon witnessed the slaughter that followed.

For Jamie Mackie, summer holidays in the coastal town of Rocky Head mean surfing, making money, and good times at the local music festival. But this year, vampires are on the festival’s line-up … fulfilling a pact made on the wreck of the Batavia, four hundred years ago. If their plans succeed, nobody in Rocky Head will survive to see out the new year.

Page-turning and suspenseful, Saltwater Vampires is a distinctly Australian vampire thriller.

Waiting on Wednesday is hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating. This week I picked:

Days of Blood and Starlight (Daughter of Smoke and Bone #2) by Laini Taylor
Expected publication: November 6th 2012 by Little, Brown & Company

In this stunning sequel to the highly acclaimed "Daughter of Smoke and Bone," Karou must come to terms with who and what she is, and how far she'll go to avenge her people. Filled with heartbreak and beauty, mysteries and secrets, new characters and old favorites, Days of Blood and Starlight brings the richness, color and intensity of the first book to a brand new canvas.

Daughter of Smoke and Bone was declared a "must read" by Entertainment Weekly, was named a Best Book of the Year by Amazon.com, and The New York Times called it "a breath-catching romantic fantasy."

Dewey's 24 Hour Read-a-Thon!

1) Which hour was most daunting for you? I'm not sure since I didn't read too long because I couldn't concentrate on reading. I was worrying about something.
2) Could you list a few high-interest books that you think could keep a Reader engaged for next year? The Monstrumologist by Rick Yancey
3) Do you have any suggestions for how to improve the Read-a-thon next year? Nope.
4) What do you think worked really well in this year’s Read-a-thon? Not sure since I didn't really participate because of the worrying.
5) How many books did you read? Half of one.
6) What were the names of the books you read? I read half of A Dangerous Inheritance by Alison Weir.
7) Which book did you enjoy most? What I read of A Dangerous Inheritance by Alison Weir was great.
8) Which did you enjoy least? Ummm....
9) If you were a Cheerleader, do you have any advice for next year’s Cheerleaders?
10) How likely are you to participate in the Read-a-thon again? What role would you be likely to take next time? I will participate again. I will hopefully read more next time.

Dewey's 24 Hour Read-a-Thon!

1) What fine part of the world are you reading from today? Ontario Canada
2) Which book in your stack are you most looking forward to? A Dangerous Inheritance by Alison Weir. It is the only book I have picked out since it's big and I'm usually really bad at read-a-thons.
3) Which snack are you most looking forward to? I don't really have any snacks.
4) Tell us a little something about yourself! I used to have a book blog a long time ago but I stopped blogging. I am excited to get back into it.
5) If you participated in the last read-a-thon, what’s one thing you’ll do different today? If this is your first read-a-thon, what are you most looking forward to? I just want to read as much as possible. During read-a-thons I usually get distracted and end up reading less than normal. So I want to try and focus more on reading.

Psycho (Psycho #1) by Robert Bloch

It was a dark and stormy night when Mary Crane glimpsed the unlit neon sign announcing the vacancy at the Bates motel. Exhausted, lost, and at the end of her rope, she was eager for a hot shower and a bed for the night.
Her room was musty but clean and the plumbing worked. Norman Bates, the manager, seemed nice, if a little odd.

FrightFall Read-a-Thon

This read-a-thon started out great. The first day I read Enclave by Ann Aguirre, and the second day I read Dead Sea by Brian Keene. However, it went down hill from there. I am loving The Vampire Lestat by Anne Rice but for some reason I can only read a few pages before I need to put the book down and take a nap. I have no idea why that is, but reading it is making me tired.

I'm sure that if I had just put it down and picked up something else, I would have kept up with the pace I had going at the beginning, but I was determined to stick with it and get through it. As you can tell, I'm still not finished it. I am only about half way, page 300 to be exact. I don't understand how a book that I am enjoying as much as this one can be so hard to get through. I don't remember Interview with the Vampire being this hard.

I guess I will just put it aside for awhile and pick up something else. I will read a few pages of it here and there, whenever I feel like reading it, and hopefully I will finish it before the end of the year. I am just so confused as to why I'm having trouble reading it.

Other than my problems with The Vampire Lestat, I did enjoy the read-a-thon. I just wish I had read more. Oh well, maybe next time.

Waiting on Wednesday

Waiting on Wednesday is hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating. This week I picked:

Velveteen (Velveteen #1) by Daniel Marks
Expected publication: October 9th 2012 by Random House Children's Books

Velveteen Monroe is dead. At 16, she was kidnapped and murdered by a madman named Bonesaw. But that’s not the problem.

The problem is she landed in purgatory. And while it’s not a fiery inferno, it’s certainly no heaven. It’s gray, ashen, and crumbling more and more by the day, and everyone has a job to do. Which doesn’t leave Velveteen much time to do anything about what’s really on her mind.

Bonesaw.

Velveteen aches to deliver the bloody punishment her killer deserves. And she’s figured out just how to do it. She’ll haunt him for the rest of his days.

It’ll be brutal... and awesome.

But crossing the divide between the living and the dead has devastating consequences. Velveteen’s obsessive haunting cracks the foundations of purgatory and jeopardizes her very soul. A risk she’s willing to take—except fate has just given her reason to stick around: an unreasonably hot and completely off-limits coworker.

Velveteen can’t help herself when it comes to breaking rules... or getting revenge. And she just might be angry enough to take everyone down with her.
